New Life Linux

A Linux Mint-based distribution with multiple desktop environments.

Desktop Environments

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a modern desktop environment that embraces the traditional desktop metaphor (bottom panel, menus, icons). It's an ideal choice for those switching from Windows to Linux because the interface is familiar and intuitive. They don't like radically new interface concepts (like GNOME Shell or Unity). They simply want a clean and efficient workspace. Cinnamon is a modern desktop environment that embraces the traditional desktop metaphor (bottom panel, menus, icons). They simply want a clean and efficient workspace. High Level of Customizability: This is one of its biggest strengths. You can modify almost everything without needing external tools or complicated settings. Themes: You can easily switch between different visual styles, icon packs, and cursor themes. Panel and Dock: You can move your panel to any side of the screen, modify its size, add/remove applets (small applications like weather, system load indicator, etc.). installer

Performance

LXQT (Intel)

LXQt is a modern, fast, and energy-efficient desktop environment that prioritizes stability and low resource consumption. It was born from the merger of the famous, classic LXDE and the Razor-qt project, thus combining proven solutions with modern technologies. It's an ideal choice for both older and modern computers that appreciate seamless and productive work.It requires minimal memory (RAM) and processor load even at startup, so it can run smoothly even on older or lower-performance hardware. installer

Performance

IceWM

Minimal resource usage: IceWM is in the world of low-memory or older machines. Startup time happens in moments, and its RAM and CPU usage is negligible even compared to a modern desktop environment (e.g., GNOME, KDE) or even a full-fledged window manager (e.g., Xfce). For comparison: While a GNOME or KDE can consume up to 1-2 GB of RAM after startup, IceWM can manage with less than 100 MB. Ideal for old machines, virtual machines, and servers: If you have a machine that is "slow" with modern desktop environments, IceWM can bring it to life. Also a perfect choice on servers where GUI is only needed occasionally. Xorg has been replaced by Xlib, Thunderbird by the Betterbird email client, and Firefox by the Librewolf browser. The current installer is version 2.3.9.
